THE 25 BEST Cruises to Puerto Limon 2024 with Prices Puerto Limon Cruise Port Terminal on Cruise Critic

puerto limon cruise port

If you visit Costa Rica by cruise, the Caribbean coast cruise terminal is located here. Tipping is not expected in Costa Rica since a 10% service charge is already added to the bill in restaurants. However, if service was exceptional, it is acceptable to tip an additional 5% to 10%. Likewise, taxi drivers don’t expect a tip but it is appreciated. The official currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colon.

Exploring Cahuita is done by walking the 5-mile (8-kilometer) hiking trail (one way) through the park. Along the trail, there are stunning beaches to explore as well as lots of wildlife. If you haven’t pre-booked shore excursions there will be plenty of people offering tours.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

There is also a desk for local tour operators (Caribe Tico, Blue Limbo, Mambo Tours) within the terminal. They offer alternatives to the ship's tours to the Cahuita Coastal National Park, Tortuguero Canals, Rain Forest Aerial Tram as well as a two-hour Limon tour and an eight-hour trip to San Jose. There is also a range of more active trips, including horse-riding, watersports, and canopy tours. The Puerto Limon’s cruise dock is located about 250 yards/meters from the city center.

Head to Puerto Viejo

….if none of those appeal to you, check out our Guide to the Caribbean Coast for more ideas of places to visit in this area. Hotel Playa Westfalia – Located directly on the beach, this hotel has a private pool and on-site restaurant. If for whatever reason you do find yourself stuck here, here are three hotel options that will be OK. Red Snapper Restaurant – We have always had good experiences here. Another weird thing, July is the rainiest month to visit Limon, but come August, it almost completely dries up.

Plan with a local

Embark on an open-air tram and go for a ride above the rainforest canopy for a bird’s-eye view of the trees. You can also glide above the canopy on a ziplining adventure. It is not crime-free, though, so it still pays to take care in its towns and streets. However, it is one of the most relaxed and welcoming places to visit in Central America, and Puerto Limon is well-located for its best eco-tourist attractions.

But, as I mentioned I don’t suggest staying in the city of Limon. A combo tour is basically a tour that combines several different activities in one fun filled day. We like this because it takes the stress off of you to plan multiple activities and usually it is way cheaper than booking multiple things.

The journey takes three hours each way, which leaves little time there, and traffic jams could delay you and cause you to miss the ship. Even the one-hour Cahuita journey is a risk as the buses only run every two or three hours. The same applies if you hire a car from the desk in the terminal -- the roads are just not that good in Costa Rica and traffic delays are a constant problem. If you have time between tours, Limon is worth an hour or two. If you go into the city, you can find other shops and visit the Etnohitorico Museum which is 10 minutes from the cruise terminal. Just as spending time on the beach is really a waste at this destination (although there are some good ones around) so is shopping, especially as there is not a lot to buy.

Night Caribbean - Other ProductDetails

Since this region of Costa Rica is located on the coast it has been influenced by Jamaican culture so in turn, a lot of the food here is much different than in the rest of Costa Rica. Dishes are made with unique spices and Caribbean cooking methods. This park is a great choice if you have an hour or two of extra time in downtown Limón. It’s a private tour too so only your group will go which means you’ll have more opportunity to learn from your guide and ask questions. The name itself, Playa Bonita or Beautiful Beach, should convince you to visit this amazing beach.

There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book. As with any large city, there are always great places to shop and explore in the city itself.

If you want to get up close and personal with the rainforest surrounding the Tortuguero Canal, take a zipline and canopy tour! A trip to Costa Rica is not complete until you are soaring through the canopy of the rainforest, and Tortuguero Canal is one of the most beautiful places to experience it. The park is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm, and standard admission which includes the walking trails and aerial tram, is $62 USD. If you have your own vehicle, you can just drive out to the park and purchase your ticket, exploring on your own. If you have your own transportation and can meet the guide at the entrance, this tour is an excellent walking tour of the park.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica is one of the largest cities in Costa Rica and definitely worth your time to explore! It’s a beautiful port city, also known as Port Limon, located on the eastern coast of the country. Limon is also a destination location for many cruise ships, so there are always things happening at Port Limon.

At Punta Uva, you can take a short hike to a scenic lookout point overlooking the water and coral reef. While in Puerto Limon on your Caribbean cruise, you’ll likely enjoy pleasant weather due to its temperate climate that hovers around 77 degrees throughout the year. With all of the wonderful shore excursion options in Puerto Limon, it's easy to understand why many people rate Costa Rica as a favorite place to spend their entire Central American vacation. There are buses from Limon to places like Cahuita ($1 each-way), Moin (50 cents) and even to the capital San Jose, more than 100 miles away.

Columbus "discovered" Costa Rica on his fourth voyage to the Americas and was so impressed that he named it Costa Rica. Columbus landed at an ancient village near Puerto Limon, and it proved to be one of the best ports on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Although the taxi fares are posted (for example, $20 to Cahuita), these are all negotiable. Their drivers' English is patchy so, if you are looking for a guide as well as a driver, check this first.

Other, more international-style restaurants (often in hotels) in Limon and nearby Moin serve good seafood among other more recognizable dishes. It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English. Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past. Other than the couple of hotels mentioned above, most other options are either very similar to the above or not suitable to recommend.
