Exploring Cahuita is done by walking the 5-mile (8-kilometer) hiking trail (one way) through the park. Along the trail, there are stunning beaches to explore as well as lots of wildlife. If you haven’t pre-booked shore excursions there will be plenty of people offering tours.

The journey takes three hours each way, which leaves little time there, and traffic jams could delay you and cause you to miss the ship. Even the one-hour Cahuita journey is a risk as the buses only run every two or three hours. The same applies if you hire a car from the desk in the terminal -- the roads are just not that good in Costa Rica and traffic delays are a constant problem. If you have time between tours, Limon is worth an hour or two. If you go into the city, you can find other shops and visit the Etnohitorico Museum which is 10 minutes from the cruise terminal. Just as spending time on the beach is really a waste at this destination (although there are some good ones around) so is shopping, especially as there is not a lot to buy.

There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book. As with any large city, there are always great places to shop and explore in the city itself.
If you want to get up close and personal with the rainforest surrounding the Tortuguero Canal, take a zipline and canopy tour! A trip to Costa Rica is not complete until you are soaring through the canopy of the rainforest, and Tortuguero Canal is one of the most beautiful places to experience it. The park is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm, and standard admission which includes the walking trails and aerial tram, is $62 USD. If you have your own vehicle, you can just drive out to the park and purchase your ticket, exploring on your own. If you have your own transportation and can meet the guide at the entrance, this tour is an excellent walking tour of the park.

It’s a beautiful port city, also known as Port Limon, located on the eastern coast of the country. While in Puerto Limon on your Caribbean cruise, you’ll likely enjoy pleasant weather due to its temperate climate that hovers around 77 degrees throughout the year. With all of the wonderful shore excursion options in Puerto Limon, it's easy to understand why many people rate Costa Rica as a favorite place to spend their entire Central American vacation. There are buses from Limon to places like Cahuita ($1 each-way), Moin (50 cents) and even to the capital San Jose, more than 100 miles away.
